Inlet Valve, Outlet Valve and Float Explained
Most cistern faults trace back to three parts: an inlet valve, an outlet valve and the seals around them, and each one fails with its own symptom.
The inlet valve
tops the cistern back up after you flush and closes once the float lifts to its set height. When it wears or blocks, the cistern refills at a crawl or never shuts off.
The outlet valve
, or drop valve, holds the water between flushes. Once its washer perishes, water creeps down into the pan and the inlet valve keeps refilling the loss, which is the classic running toilet.
The float
sets the fill level. Set too low, the flush comes out weak; set too high, water runs down the overflow.
A weak or partial flush
usually traces to a cistern holding less water than it should, jets under the rim furred with scale, or a flush button that sticks halfway.
An empty cistern after a flush
, with the supply on, points to a blocked inlet valve, a float riding low, or a stop tap someone left half open.

Silent Leaks and Sewer Smells
A toilet leaks in three spots, and each spot points to a different part: the cistern itself, the base where the pan meets the floor, and the supply connection feeding it.
Water on the floor at the base
points to the pan connector and its rubber seal, the supply join, or a crack in the pan.
Water between cistern and pan
means the seal joining those two has failed.
Water at the supply end
usually comes from the stop tap, often called a mini stop, or the braided hose feeding it.
A sewer smell
at the loo usually means the rubbers sealing the pan to the drainpipe have perished or shifted, so gas escapes past them.
A silent leak hides from you. Stir a little food colouring through the cistern water and wait without flushing; if colour shows up in the bowl, water is escaping, and flushing afterwards clears it because the dye does not stain ceramic. Our guide to why your loo keeps running goes further if you want the full picture.

Toilet Repairs for Owners and Tenants
Queensland law splits toilet work along one line. Anyone with the right skill may swap a cistern's drop valve washer, float valve washer or suction cup rubber, provided the work still meets the standards.
Everything else on a loo is minor work, so a QBCC licensee carries it out. It needs neither a permit nor a Form 4. Seals, pan connectors, buttons, inlet and outlet valves: all of it sits with a licensed plumber.
Rentals have their own line. Queensland tenancy rules class a loo that blocks or breaks as an emergency repair, and the owner or manager has a duty under those rules to keep the place in good repair.
The tenant reports faults promptly. If you manage a rental here, that is worth knowing before the next inspection.

When a Cracked Toilet Is Past Repair
The cost turns on which part failed, whether the china has cracked, how reachable the cistern and its stop tap are, and how many components get swapped. You get a fixed quote once we have seen the job, and the figure does not move after that.
Cracks in the porcelain mark the point where repair stops and replacement starts. No washer or seal fixes split china. A suite on its third repair in a year can also work out dearer than a new one, so we will say so rather than sell you the next fix.
Replacement products carry two marks. WaterMark certification is what a licensed plumber needs to legally install the fixture, and registration under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme, known as WELS, grades its water use. We fit only products that carry both.

Estate Homes and Their Cisterns
The homes around Mango Hill East railway station went up fast during the estate boom. The fittings that kept build costs down are now at the age where they fail, and the braided hose feeding many a cistern here can split without warning.
The plastic isolation valves from the same era are the first pieces to weep. That is why we check the supply line and the stop tap on every cistern job, not just the part that failed. A worn tap replacement in the same bathroom can usually ride along on the same visit.

Toilet Repair Questions From Mango Hill
Call (07) 3524 7137Why is my toilet cistern not filling up?
The usual culprits are an inlet valve worn or blocked, a float set too low and a stop tap that is not fully open. We test all three, replace what has failed, and the cistern fills normally again.
Why does my toilet smell like sewage?
Sewer gas at the loo points to the rubbers where the pan joins the drain, which can perish or shift with age. A licensed plumber checks those seals and the pan connector, then renews them so gas stops escaping into the room.
Should I repair or replace an old toilet?
Repair is the right call while the china is intact and only one valve or seal has worn. Replacement makes more sense once the porcelain cracks, or when the same loo keeps needing repair after repair.
Can a cracked cistern or pan be repaired in Mango Hill?
No, cracked porcelain is past fixing, because no seal or valve mends split china. We quote a new cistern or pan instead, and our toilet installation service covers the swap.
Does Unitywater cover a leaking cistern on my bill?
No, the utility's concealed leak adjustment excludes water a cistern loses, so the owner carries that cost. That is one reason a running cistern is worth fixing soon rather than watching the next bill climb.
